If you’re new to sleep apnea treatment with CPAP or you’ve been using a CPAP device for years, it’s important to understand how to properly use and maintain your mask. In this blog, we’ll explore the most common CPAP mask problems, discuss how to avoid them, and share tips to help you stay comfortable and consistent with your therapy.

Understanding Common CPAP Mask Problems

Many users experience difficulties that may interfere with the effectiveness of their CPAP mask. Some frequently reported issues include:

  • Air leaks around the mask seal
  • Mouth leak discomfort
  • Pressure sores or redness on the face
  • Discomfort and dryness in the nose or mouth

By identifying these common CPAP mask problems, you can take steps that could help resolve them early and ensure a better night’s sleep.

How to Fix CPAP Mask Leaks

Leaks are one of the most frequent common CPAP mask problems and could drastically reduce therapy effectiveness. Here are some potential CPAP mask discomfort solutions and steps on to how to approach the CPAP mask leaks:

  1. Adjust the Headgear: Overtightening can cause discomfort and lead to leaks. Try loosening the straps gradually and reposition the mask for a better seal.
  2. Mouth Leaks: When first starting on CPAP therapy, your mouth may drop open causing the air to escape out the mouth and not be holding your airway open like its designed to. This can be fixed with the use of a Chin strap to either train the jaw muscles to keep your mouth closed, or by simply stopping it from falling open. Sometimes full face masks can be preferred, but it is a personal preference.
  3. Check for Worn-Out Cushions: Over time, mask cushions can degrade. Replace them as recommended by the manufacturer.
  4. Clean Your Mask Regularly: Oil from your skin can create gaps, and does not allow the mask to effectively seal on the face, so follow CPAP mask cleaning tips for proper maintenance.
  5. Use specialised CPAP mask wipes daily: These wipes are designed specifically for CPAP equipment, and can keep your mask fresh and comfortable and keep the seal in good condition for longer.
  6. Avoid heavy moisturisers and night creams on the areas the CPAP mask comes into contact with your skin: Moisturisers and night creams can create a barrier between your mask and skin, which can impact effective seals, create leaks, and encourage the mask to move around and cause friction/abrasion on the skin, and in some cases, cause the seal to tear.
  7. Try a Different Mask Size: One size does not fit all. If your mask feels too tight, too loose, or frequently shifts during sleep, you may need a different size. Many masks come in multiple cushion sizes, and even slight size adjustments can make a big difference in fit and comfort. A properly fitting mask should create a secure seal without excessive pressure on the face. If you’re unsure, consult one of our CPAP specialists to determine the best fit for your facial structure and therapy needs.

Preventing CPAP Mask Pressure Sores

Excessive pressure from an ill-fitted or aging mask could lead to CPAP mask pressure sores. To prevent soreness:

  • Follow manufactures advice for fitting/fitting and sizing guides: Keep in mind that when on the cusp of sizing a full face mask (except the ones that fit under the nose), you are better to go up to compensate for ‘mouth drop’ and to size down when on the cusp of under the nose nasal masks or pillows.
  • Proper Fitting: Get in touch with our specialised CPAP advisors to ensure the mask is correctly sized, or to help trouble shoot fitting issues.
  • Soft Cushion Liners: These add a layer of protection and comfort, without compromising the mask seal.
  • Rotate Mask Styles: Sometimes switching between nasal pillows and different nasal masks might help relieve pressure points, or between a nasal mask or pillows with a full face mask, when illness or seasonal allergies make it hard to use.
  • Loosen Straps: Over-tightening is a common mistake and can make it harder for the mask to seal. A snug but comfortable fit is key. If your mask is at the point of feeling it needs to be tightened onto the face to work, but was good before, it might be time to replace your mask.
  • Replace masks at least once a year: sometimes more depending on cleaning practices, and how high your pressure needs are. CPAP masks are crucial in ensuring that your CPAP therapy is optimised by not needing to compensate for leaks.

CPAP Mask Discomfort Solutions

If you experience discomfort, dryness, or irritation, consider these CPAP mask discomfort solutions:

  • Humidification: Use a heated humidifier on your CPAP machine to reduce dryness or heated tubing to reduce excessive moisture build up in your CPAP mask or hose.
  • Mask Wraps: Fabric wraps can help cushion sensitive areas, or provide a barrier for people with sensitivities.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Hydrate well, use nasal sprays for congestion, and sleep on your side if possible to help reduce pressure demands.
  • Try a different mask: Different brands can fit differently, even across the same style of mask- think of masks as shoes for the face, they all fit everyone differently.

CPAP Mask Maintenance Guide

Regular maintenance is essential for maximising the lifespan of your mask and ensuring optimal performance. Here’s a quick CPAP mask maintenance guide:

  • Daily Wipe-Down: Use a CPAP soap and warm water or specialized CPAP wipes to remove facial oils and debris- never anything abrasive, as can react with skin and mask seal.
  • Weekly Deep Clean: Disassemble the mask and soak it in warm water with CPAP soap. Gently clean with soft cloth around grooves, rinse thoroughly and air-dry out of direct sunlight.
  • Check for Damage: Inspect the cushion, frame, and headgear for signs of wear or tear.
  • Replace Components: Follow manufacturer guidelines on how frequently to replace cushions, headgear, and other parts, or if the mask is looking aged or sealing ineffectively (once trouble shooting with the above steps).
  • Following these CPAP mask cleaning tips helps maintain a hygienic seal, effective CPAP pressure delivery, and might prolong the life of your mask.
